The Annabelle Hydrangea has deep roots in Anna.  Harriet Kirkpatrick of the famous Anna Potter Family is credited with the discovery of the Annabelle Hydrangea.  It is said in 1910 she and her sister Amy were horseback riding in some woods in Anna when they came upon the hydrangea.  Some fifty years after the discovery, Bon Hartline of Anna, best known for his work with hybrid holly shrubs and trees, became interested in the hydrangea.  He invited Dr. J.C. McDaniel, his former University of Illinois professor, to study the plant.  In 1960 Dr. McDaniel classified and registered the plant under the scientific name Hydrangea Arborescence in 1960.  It is generally believed that the common name “Annabelle” was chosen to commemorate the two “belles” from Anna who discovered the beautiful plant 100 years ago!

Annabelle Hydrangea’s will be for sale at the festival, along with local vendor products. Plan to come out for a full day and evening of activities for the whole family.
